The Miracle of the Human Body - Nutrition (SCS 1580-005)

Call for new date.   6:30-8:30 pm.     Eight sessions (16 hours).  Fee: $290 plus GST

No prerequisite, open to everyone.

** Final class date can be brought forward by consensus.

COURSE OBJECTIVE:

Hippocrates, considered the Father of Medicine, said, “Let Food Be Thy Medicine”! Many chronic diseases are connected to what we eat and how we manage stress. This course will help you to separate nutrition facts from fiction. You will: (a) Gain knowledge of current nutritional science, (b) Understand nutrition information on food labels, (c) Discover how to use food to prevent many killer diseases and manage your weight, (d) Learn to manage the disease you already have and, (e) Improve your mental and physical health through diet and behaviour.

  • Basic physiology: How and why your body does what it does.
  • Interpreting and using Canada’s Food Guide and information on food labels.
  • Reducing your risk: Cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and other diseases.
  • Managing your disease: Cancer, heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, etc.
  • A stitch in time: Interpreting your lab results – blood and urine.
  • Maintaining a healthy digestive system/ management of digestive disorders.
  • Brain food or fad? Aging, diet and brain function.
  • Energy drinks, caffeine, artificial sweeteners, fat replacers, alcohol etc.
  • Functional Foods: probiotics, omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and many more.
  • Natural Health Products. Genetically modified foods: Is there reason to be afraid?
  • Environmental Contaminants and Food Safety.
  • Food Additives: How safe are they? Organic Foods: Are they worth the cost?
  • From the womb to the tomb: An overview of nutritional needs.
  • Sports nutrition: Enhance your physical performance.
  • How to eat whatever you like, manage your weight and stay healthy – Yes! It is possible!

Dr. Sandra Romano Anthony is a Nutritionist and Health Promoter who teaches Nutrition and Stress Management throughout the province. She has worked with the World Health Organization and is now a member of the North York Health Committee (Toronto Board of Health). She translates science into plain language that everyone can understand and teaches with both passion and humour. You’ll never fall asleep in this class!
